Abstract:

These weather station records were collected as part of a larger study relating microclimates to tree seedling survival in southern California mountains. These weather station records are for studies at the San Joaquin Experimental Range (Lat 37.083, Long -119.716, elevation 210-520 m, www.fs.fed.us/psw/ef/san_joaquin/). Weather stations were located at six sites across the landscape. Sites were selected to sample topographic variation in surface and air temperatures within a narrow range of elevations on northeast to southwest-facing slopes, ridges, and valleys. Three full weather stations (north slope, south slope, and valley floor) monitored precipitation, wind, insolation, temperature, relative humidity, and soil moisture. Three micro stations (west slope, east slope, and ridge) measured soil moisture at -20 cm. Data was recorded on a 10-minute interval using HOBO (Onset, www.onsetcomp.com) devices.

Protocols and/or Procedures
Description:

Temperatures were recorded using HOBO (Onset, www.onsetcomp.com) model U23-004 (single thermocouple) and U23-003 (double thermocouple) sensors, which have an operating range of -40 to 70C and accuracy of +/-0.21C from 0 to 50C. Sensor integrity was checked for 24 hrs in a constant-temperature environment prior to field deployment. Sensors were suspended 5 cm above the soil surface with vertical station sensors suspended at 5 cm, 50 cm, and 2 m above the soil surface at select landscape locations. Weather stations had additional temperature sensors at -10 cm (soil temp), 5 cm, and 1 m. The air temperature sensors were shielded from direct sunlight by inverted white styrene funnels 10 cm in diameter. For brevity we refer to these near-surface air temperatures (5 cm) as "surface temperatures" but emphasize that these were not taken on the ground surface. Temperatures were recorded at 10-minute intervals for single thermocouple sensors and at 20-minute intervals for double thermocouple sensors (vertical stations 5 cm and 2 m). Data were downloaded manually twice over the course of the year and underwent extensive automated and manual quality control.

This data is part of a larger dataset of soil, near-surface, and temperature data, including meteorological data and seedling data. These datasets were acquired across multiple locations in southern California mountains from 2011 to 2017. All project data and down-scaled climate grids of the region are available at http://m2m.biogeog.ucsb.edu.
